I’ve long been a fan of Ivan Chermayeff’s torn paper collages, but there’s something about these particular ones for the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition that places them in the front of my mind. Maybe it’s the levity and exuberance of color, or the implied joy of witnessing a loosely arranged composition, a bit like watching a pianist go through a piece masterfully while barely holding it all together.
